Gleick to Debate Water Privatization at Commonwealth Club S.F.

Aging water systems, growing populations, water scarcity, and the threat of climate change have all put serious stress on our public water systems. Some municipalities are turning to private water or wastewater companies to meet their needs, but many questions remain about the wisdom of privatizing this essential resource. What are the risks and benefits of privatization? What are the hidden pitfalls? Is there a way to protect the public interest and the environment?

WHO Peter Gleick will debate Adrian Moore of the Reason Foundation and John Sylvia, CEO of Aqua International, on the subject of water privatization. Brian Chase of Nossaman, Guthner, Knox & Elliott, LLP will moderate. WHEN Thursday, June 17th; 5:30 pm reception, 6:00 pm discussion. WHERE The Commonwealth Club of San Francisco, 595 Market Street at Second Street, 2nd Floor. COST The event is $8 for members of The Commonwealth Club and $15 non-members.

Interest is strong, so please register online or call (415) 597-6700

Environmental Indicators Project a Step Closer to New Home

The West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project made an important step towards becoming a community run initiative this month. The Coalition for West Oakland Revitalization and the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Committee signed a Memorandum of Understanding clarifying the roles and responsibilities of various organizations. This will allow the community to continue to update the indicators and continue their work of making West Oakland a cleaner and safer place to live.

Community Strategies Program Adds Staff for New Projects

The Community Strategies for Sustainability and Justice program is pleased to announce the addition of two new staff members.
