Overview

In July 2010, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly recognized access to safe drinking water and sanitation as a human right. Two months later, the UN Human Rights Council affirmed this right by a consensus resolution. This white paper, produced by the UN Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate  — which the Pacific Institute is co-secretariat for — provides information on how companies can meaningfully address the human right to water. It also examines how the CEO Water Mandate can contribute to business’ ability to effectively address this issue.
