Energy and Water

Water use decisions can have significant energy impacts. Moving, heating and treating water can all expend a significant amount of energy. Being aware of this connection, which is often hidden from plain sight, can help to reduce energy use and cut the amount of pollution in our skies.

"Energy Down the Drain," a report we cowrote with the NRDC, asks policy makers and water users to think about energy use when making decisions about water issues. Better understanding this relationship will help us make better decisions -- benefiting everyone across the state.

Our Water to Air Models provide tools to help water managers understand the energy, and air pollution, implications of water management decisions.
