California Scientist elected to International Water Academy, Oslo, Norway
December 6, 1999, Oakland, California. Dr. Peter H. Gleick, the director of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security, in Oakland has been elected an Academician at the International Water Academy in Oslo, Norway. He will be affiliated with the Science and Research section. Membership is for life.
Dr. Gleick is recognized as an international expert in a wide range of water issues. He has done groundbreaking research on the implications of climatic changes for water resources, on the risks of conflicts over water, and on long-term sustainable management and use of water in California and internationally. He is the author of two books on water (Water in Crisis from Oxford University Press in 1993 and The World's Water 1998-1999 from Island Press in 1998) and many scientific papers. His most recent work addresses a human right to water and meeting the water needs of the billions of people without access to clean water supplies and sanitation. He also currently serves as co-chair of the Water Sector of the National Assessment of the Impacts of Climatic Variability and Change for the United States and as a director of the International Water Resources Association.
Gleick co-founded and directs the Pacific Institute in Oakland, a non-profit policy research center. The Pacific Institute also works extensively on California water policy issues, addressing the potential to reduce the waste of water, to meet ecosystem water needs, and the need for long-term planning.
Modeled after national academies of science, the IWA was founded in 1998 to address critical water issues throughout the world from a diversity of perspectives. Election to the Academy is for life and is reserved for a small number of individuals. Total membership in the Academy will be limited to 500 individuals. As of November 1999, only 120 members had been chosen, making early selection particularly prestigious.
